| Contract Laboratory Services (CLS) was established in July 2000 as a joint venture between the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) and the Wits Health Consortium (WHC).
The organization has provided 10 years of infectious disease laboratory services to the largest public service laboratory provider in South Africa, the NHLS, in the areas of safety testing (haematology and chemical pathology), serology, TB, flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, genotyping resistance, cytogenetics and HIV EQA. |

CLS services clinical trials laboratory requirements of the pharmaceutical industry, grant funded and other donor driven research, by providing routine and specialized diagnostic and research pathology services. CLS ensures that all laboratory investigations are conducted in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards. CLS is currently accredited by SANAS ,PPD and Qualogy.
CLS is a registered as a section 10.1(A) Company. This allows us to generate profit which is ultimately directed back into the University and the Wits School of Pathology to assist with ongoing research initiatives. CLS operates as an independent company headed by an independent board. Notable contributions by CLS include:
· Leaders in the development of affordable HIV surveillance and diagnostics in South Africa
· Recently, the CD4 assay developed at this site has received FDA approval
· Ongoing research and development is being conducted into assays important in the diagnosis and monitoring of HIV
· Piloted 1st ever HSV-2 EQA program for Africa
· HIV p24 assay EQA program in pilot phase
